International Summer School 2024: A Transformative Journey in Sustainable Energies and Entrepreneurship
From July 8 to July 19, 19 students from 13 countries embarked on an inspiring and educational journey themed "Empowering Tomorrow: Sustainable Energies and Entrepreneurship." This program provided a unique blend of lectures, workshops, and cultural experiences, creating an enriching environment for learning and collaboration.
The first week began with a warm welcome from Prof. Dr. Gunther Friedl and an introduction to the foundations of sustainable entrepreneurship by Prof. Dr. Frank-Martin Belz. Our own PhD candidate Prashant Pant followed, delivering engaging lectures on clean and affordable energies. The week continued with notable highlights from industry and academic experts, including an inspiring session with Florian Henle, CEO & Co-Founder of Polarstern Energy, who spoke about transforming the world with energy, and Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Rams, CEO & Co-Founder of Africa GreenTec, who captivated the audience with his talk on pioneering mini-grids in the Global South. Felix Poernbacher, Co-CEO & Co-Founder of DeepDrive, provided insights into e-mobility in the Global North, while Valerie Labi, CEO & Co-Founder of Wahu! Mobility, led a dynamic workshop on e-mobility business models. We even got a chance to try one of their famous e-bikes!
On the second week, participants shifted focus to practical applications and advanced learning. The week kicked off with Silvia Angel’s storytelling and presentation training sessions, equipping participants with essential skills for effective communication. This was followed by an inspiring class from Svenja Zösmair on the transformative power of student initiatives like TU eMpower Africa, showcasing how young leaders can drive significant change. Workshops on sustainable business model development led by Katharina Eichinger - proud program manager of this event - provided hands-on experience in creating viable and impactful business plans. And on top of all these experiences, we also explored the Makerspace at the Entrepreneurship Research Institute in Garching, and shared a beer together at the beautiful Bräustüberl Weihenstephan.
But not everything was studying! During these weeks, we also took the opportunity to explore the wonders of Munich and the Bavarian region. Activities such a city tour through Old Town, seeing the sunset together at Olympiapark and going on a typical German hike in the Bavarian Alps will for sure be some of the highlights in the hearts and minds of our participants!
The whole event culminated in final presentations, where participants showcased their innovative and sustainable ideas to a panel of experts, receiving invaluable feedback and celebrating their creative achievements. This year, different groups developed exciting business models on projects around diverse topics, like the engaging with the social potential of e-mobility in Ghana to push the industry forward while also providing job opportunities, the promotion of solar dehydrators to help farmers to add value to their products and, at the same time, reduce food waste in India, an exciting novel approach to encourage the adoption of sustainable smart-home systems with a focus on the Asian market, and a sustainable way to produce energy from our own steps, which could really push the adoption of renewables in high-density infrastructures, such as airports and train stations.
Overall, the International Summer School 2024 was a transformative experience for everyone involved. Participants left with new knowledge, skills, and a network of like-minded peers committed to driving sustainable change, and we are thrilled of having the opportunity to meet them and contribute in their paths forward! We wish them all the best in their future endeavors, hoping the experiences and knowledge acquired during these two weeks will continue to inspire and guide them as they work towards a more sustainable future. And we are already excited to see what ISS 2025 will bring!
