Second HyperMet Progress Meeting
The HyperMet research unit held its second Progress Meeting, which summarized recent developments in individual research projects. Presentations covered advances in cancer cachexia, metabolic imaging, large‑animal models, and public outreach.
Maria Rohm (P06 HyperCancer) reported progress on metabolic alterations in tumour–muscle interactions. Mouse models of colorectal cancer showed consistent muscle atrophy, and multi‑omics analyses highlighted activated one‑carbon metabolism and altered glucose fluxes in cachectic muscle.
The P05 HyperImaGene team, led by Nathalia Dragano and Franz Schilling, presented new results from imaging‑based studies on Mstn knockout mice and semaglutide‑induced metabolic changes. Work included refined PET/MRS protocols, MRI‑based fat–water quantification, and continued development of metabolic imaging workflows.
Arne Hinrichs and Malek Torgeman (P04 HyperPig) reported continued efforts to generate MSTN‑deficient Göttingen Minipigs using CRISPR/Cas9. Established arterio‑venous metabolomics and tracer‑based flux methods enabled detailed metabolic profiling, with further experiments planned to characterize repartitioning effects.
The Ministry of Public Relations presented ongoing initiatives to increase HyperMet’s visibility through the website, LinkedIn, and hosted a workshop on science communication. A researcher‑focused LinkedIn series is currently underway.
The meeting highlighted steady progress across all projects and ongoing collaboration within the unit.
HyperMet research examines the impact of muscle growth (hypertrophy) and muscle loss (atrophy) on metabolism. Increased muscle mass reduces the risk of obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis, and potentially cancer. We are exploring the underlying metabolic processes to develop new strategies for prevention and everyday life.
