Fourth HyperMet Progress Report
The fourth HyperMet progress report presented, equally, both progress within individual research projects and topics of research unit wide interest.
Prof. Dr. Hanna Taipaleenmäki, Principal Investigator of P02-HyperBone and Co-Speaker of HyperMet, together with PhD candidate Angeliki Kalyva, presented advances in the study of metabolic crosstalk between skeletal muscle, bone, and bone marrow adipose tissue. The team reported progress in metabolomic flux analyses, studies of bone marrow adiposity, and collaborative investigations of how metabolic interventions affect bone health.
Dr. Kenneth Dyar and Dr. Janina Tokarz presented recent developments from P03-HyperSteroids, highlighting ongoing work on metabolic mechanisms associated with skeletal muscle growth and metabolic health, as well as collaborations with other HyperMet projects.
Prof. Dr. Karsten Hiller and Prof. Dr. Franz Schilling reported on activities within the ministry “Advanced Methods”, including developments in metabolic flux analysis, arteriovenous metabolomics, metabolic imaging, spatial metabolomics, and data-driven approaches for metabolic research.
Updates from the unit “Scientific Focus, Monitoring, Quality and Risk Management” were presented by Prof. Dr. Hanna Taipaleenmäki and Dr. Kenneth Dyar. They summarized progress-monitoring activities across HyperMet and reported that consortium projects are advancing well despite challenges with regulatory procedures, multicenter coordination, and animal-based research workflows.
HyperMet research examines the impact of muscle growth (hypertrophy) and muscle loss (atrophy) on metabolism. Increased muscle mass reduces the risk of obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis, and potentially cancer. We are exploring the underlying metabolic processes to develop new strategies for prevention and everyday life.
