First Munich Metabolic Methods Meeting
The first Munich Metabolic Methods Meeting took place on 20.01.2026 at TranslaTUM. The event brought together researchers working on experimental and analytical approaches in metabolism research. Prof. Dr. Nicole Strittmatter (TUM) delivered the keynote lecture titled “Measuring metabolism using mass spectrometry”. Her presentation provided an overview of the in situ mass spectrometry methods performed in her research group and highlighted methodological differences between LC–MS analysis and mass spectrometry imaging.
She showed applications of Mass Spectrometry Imaging in cancer metabolism on cell cultures and tissues, and host–pathogen interactions in a H. pylori infection model. For the latter, she introduced their recent work on taxon-specific markers, which can be used to map bacteria in complex matrices using mass spectrometry. The talk also covered drug distribution studies using organotypic tumor models and demonstrated how spatial pharmacometabolomics can support the analysis of treatment resistance mechanisms such as chemoresistance.
HyperMet research examines the impact of muscle growth (hypertrophy) and muscle loss (atrophy) on metabolism. Increased muscle mass reduces the risk of obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis, and potentially cancer. We are exploring the underlying metabolic processes to develop new strategies for prevention and everyday life.
