Presentation by Dr. Shalender Bhasin
Shalender Bhasin, Endocrinologist and Professor at Harvard Medical School, gave a lecture entitled “Testosterone: Effects on Muscle and Metabolism.” The talk addressed the role of testosterone as a key regulatory hormone in skeletal muscle and systemic metabolism. Testosterone was presented as a central driver of increased muscle mass and strength, while simultaneously contributing to a reduction in fat mass. Drawing on mechanistic and clinical studies, the lecture outlined how testosterone acts through androgen and estrogen receptor–dependent pathways to influence muscle hypertrophy, insulin sensitivity, and energy metabolism. The presentation highlighted long-term research establishing testosterone as an important metabolic messenger and summarized evidence from human studies demonstrating its impact on body composition and metabolic health.
