Presentation Dr. Jason R. Cantor
Dr. Jason R. Cantor, Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, gave a lecture entitled “Nature vs. Nurture: Decoding genetic and environmental contributions to human cell fitness.” In his talk, he discussed how environmental factors, in particular metabolite availability, shape cellular behavior and metabolic states. Drawing on influential previous work, he illustrated that standard cell culture conditions often fail to reflect physiological environments and can therefore mask relevant metabolic regulation. By modeling conditions that more closely resemble human plasma, his research has shown that the metabolic context can markedly alter cell fitness, nucleotide metabolism, and drug sensitivity. These findings are relevant not only for experimental cell culture but also for understanding metabolism across biological systems, from cells and model organisms to human physiology.
HyperMet research examines the impact of muscle growth (hypertrophy) and muscle loss (atrophy) on metabolism. Increased muscle mass reduces the risk of obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis, and potentially cancer. We are exploring the underlying metabolic processes to develop new strategies for prevention and everyday life.
