TUM Blockchain Research represents a group of researchers focusing on blockchain technology and its business cases at the Technical University of Munich (TUM).

The best-known use case for blockchain technology represent cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, which enable open, trustless digital payments and contracts. In the spirit of the internet’s broad reach, this technology, and the people behind it, have the potential to impact billions of people and become a crucial part of daily life.

While universities are at the beginning of researching the possibilities and limitations, several entrepreneurial initiatives have already started to build businesses based on these technologies. Deeper insights of the possibilities and constraints of the use of blockchain technologies in commercial settings can only be accomplished through interdisciplinary research. Therefore, it is necessary that computer scientists and economic experts collaborate to analyze this particular intersection between software and economy. Also, the research of computational law, especially smart contracts, cannot and should not be bound by geographic borders. Instead, it requires international cooperation to advance this emerging field.
